The wing kinematics of a high-altitude migratory insect, the monarch butterfly, are thought to be specialized for efficient high-altitude flight, but the role of altitude in these kinematics has not been adequately studied. We measured wing kinematics of migratory monarchs at altitudes ranging from 2,000 to 3,300 m as they ascended a flight-conditioned therm of the Nevada-California border. Wingbeat amplitude and cycle duration decreased with altitude, whereas the number of wingbeats in a complete flight maneuver increased with altitude. Additionally, the wingbeat frequency at the start of each wingbeat increased with altitude. Altitudinal variation in wing kinematics is consistent with our previous studies, which showed similar altitude-dependent changes in monarch flight kinematics when they ascended from the lower altitudes of Texas and the U.S.-Mexico border. Together, these results show that high-altitude flight is associated with several specialized wing kinematic features, including lower wingbeat amplitude, higher wingbeat frequency, and longer cycle duration, and that monarch wings at higher altitudes may be better suited for producing efficient high-altitude flight.2014–15 Memphis Tigers women's basketball team The 2014–
